Patriots 4 x 400m Place 2nd in Group IV Championships and advance to Meet Of Champions
Winning the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV Championship last weekend, at the Sectionals
Track & Field Meet, the Patriots 4 x 400m relay team continue their quest to the chamiponship round.
When Abe Hamami was injured last week a replacement was needed. Ordinarily that would have caused
a major problem since this relay team has run together as a unit since December. However, the depth in the Patriots track
personnel made the transistion a very simple. Ralph McFadden was inserted in the lineup and not only did he fill in gap but
also added some quickness to the already speedy relay team.
It certainly showed today during their 1600m relay meet that this team is determined in the quest.
Today showed what makes this team really great. It is what the definition of TEAM really means. When the first
leg of the relay team got off to a bad start, it was the rest of the team that pulled together to take up the slack and get
the team back on track. When Ralph McFadden receive the baton on the second leg he was back in the pack. He needed
to turn on the jets and make up some valuable time. Knowing the job that was expected of him he did just that. Running
a personal best time split time of 49.4 seconds, Ralph handed off the baton on the third leg to Booby Searby in 3rd place.
From there, the ever reliable Searby took the baton and raced around the 400 meter track with the fastest group IV boys from
all over the state. He did it in a time of 48.7 seconds. Handing the baton to anchorman Ryan Spadola. Ryan
had his work cut out for him. He had two of the fastest boys ahead of him who had won decisively in their individual heats. Accepting
the challenge, Ryan took the baton and in third place and paced himself until the final 100 meters when he turned on
his kick and in a photo finish took 2nd place in a personal best time of 48.4 seconds edging out the third place finisher
by hundreths of a second.
This team, even with adversity in its face, still managed to pull off an incredible feat. They ran a 3.18.42 time breaking their previous best record time and setting
a new Freehold District and Freehold Twp. HS school record. Most importantly, it also advances them into the
final championship round.....THE MEET OF CHAMPIONS on Wednesday June 3rd.

Freehold Twp. Patriots Track & Field Win
NJSIAA Central Jersey Sectional Group IV State Title
WIth the title on the line, it was up to the Patriots 4 x 400m relay team to win their event and clinch
the first state sectional championship for their school. Trailing in the overall team standings by 1 point to Plainsboro
HS, going into the 4 x 400m relay they knew it was time to do what they do best. WIN.
After having a record setting and very successful indoor Winter track season, and continuing that
success into the outdoor Spring season, coming up short was not the way they wanted to end their season. They knew the championship
title was theirs for the taking. They just had to beat Plainsboro HS to get enough points to advance to the State
Group Championships. That was all the motivation the boys needed to the team The foursome of Matt Intile,
Ralph McFadden, filling in for injured Abe Hamami, Bobby Searby and Ryan Spadola showed their opponents what they had been
showing oppontents from the Shore Conference all along, they where definitely Champions and they deserved to be crowned
Central Jersey Group IV Sectional Champions.
"It wasn't their best time, but they took care of business like they've been doing since we started indoor
track in December" said coach Briggs "They knew what was on the line and stepped up and got the win and we got the win
for the team." The team finished with 73 points and the 4 x 400 team advanced to the NJ Group Championships in Egg Harbor
May 30th.
